Learn about inside-out turning. You can create this unique piece by first working and hollowing it from the inside before reassembling the turning and shaping the outside.

Cut four pieces that are square, and approximately the same length. Pieces that are 1-1/2″ x 1-1/2″ x 8″ work well. Bring them together the way you want the final turning to assemble, for instance having all the growth rings in the same direction, and mark the outside corners. Then, bring all the outside corners to meet at the inside. Temporarily assemble the turning using double-faced tape between the pieces and packing tape wrapped around the outside, at the ends only.
